Custom Mountain Name Sign

A round sign, built in layers: a ring, the ridge line you chose rising inside it with a row of pines below the peaks, a raised banner carrying the name across the middle, and your state flower under that. The name is sized to fill the banner without crowding it, so the sign reads as one object instead of a word stuck onto a cutout.

We cut each layer separately and stack them: the ring, the mountain and pine field, the banner that carries the name, and the flowers. That stacking is where the shadow comes from, and it is why the peaks stand above the ring instead of sitting flush with it.

What we need from you: the name or word to engrave, the range or skyline you want cut, the state whose flower goes below the name, and your finish. Walnut-stained is dark and warm; natural birch is honey-toned and modern. That’s it.

Two finishes, one wood

Both versions are cut from the same 3/4-inch Baltic birch. What changes is the finish on the face.

Walnut-stained reads deep chocolate-brown, and the laser engraving shows high contrast against the darkened face. Warm and substantial, the right choice for a living room, entryway, master bedroom, or cabin.

Natural birch is warm and honey-toned, with a subtle, even grain and lower laser contrast than the stained face, though still clean and legible. It reads lighter and more minimal, the right choice for a nursery or a room that’s already warm and doesn’t need more darkness.

Both are built the same way, same layers, same process. The choice is aesthetic, not structural.

The silhouette

The profile is yours to choose. Name a mountain range and we draw its real ridge line. The Tetons read nothing like the Sawtooths, and that difference is the whole point of asking. Prefer a city? We cut its skyline instead, same price, same board. Either way we send you the outline before anything touches the laser, so you see the shape you are buying while it can still be changed.

Below the name sits a carved state flower, and you pick the state. Columbines for Colorado, bluebonnets for Texas, whichever of the fifty means something to the person it is going to.

The name sits on a raised ribbon banner that crosses the middle of the ring, its tails folding out past the edge on both sides. Letter height scales to the name so it fills the banner at the right proportion. Proportions hold up well from short names of four or five letters to longer ones of eleven or twelve. For names outside that range, message us first and we’ll mock it up before you order. We check that fit on every order before cutting.

How it’s made

Day 1: Design and precision laser-cut. We size the board, lay out the name inside the mountain silhouette, proof the proportions, and run the laser. The silhouette cut and the name engraving happen in a single laser pass, each edge clean, no burning. Speed is tuned per wood species for the sharpest definition.

Day 2: Sanding. Sanding runs three passes: 120-grit to clear the laser char, 220-grit for surface texture, 320-grit on the edges and back. We skip the engraved letters themselves and brush them clean, so the engraved edge stays sharp instead of getting rounded off. The result is smooth enough to touch without catching.

Day 2–3: Finish. One hand-rubbed coat of natural matte oil, food-safe and VOC-free, goes on next. We let it cure a full 24 hours before anything gets packaged.

Day 3–5: Package and ship. Kraft paper, bubble-wrap, snug cardboard box. USPS Priority Mail with tracking.

Dimensions and scale

The sign is round, at a comfortable living room or bedroom scale, substantial enough to register on a wall without overwhelming it. Message us for the exact diameter and depth before you order if wall space is tight. The stacked layers lift the peaks, the banner and the flowers off the back panel, so the sign throws its own shadow across itself rather than sitting flat the way a single-cut piece does.

If you need a different size, larger for above a fireplace or smaller for a shelf, message us. We can adjust the cut dimensions while keeping proportions consistent.

What to put on it

A family last name, a child’s first name for a nursery, a cabin name, a single word that carries weight, a place, a surname, whatever means something to the person getting it. Names up to about 12 letters work well at standard size. Very short names (under four letters) or very long ones (over 12) need a layout check first, so message us.

All capital letters, all lowercase, or title case. We can do any. If you don’t specify, we’ll default to the style that reads best for the specific name and confirm what we chose when we verify the order.

Hanging

Sawtooth hanger centered on the back, included. One nail, one level. If you want to use Command strips or your own hardware, note it at checkout and we’ll skip the hanger.

Care

Indoor use only, in normal household conditions. No bathrooms, no high-humidity spots. Dust with a dry cloth. Skip sprays. The matte oil finish is stable under normal use.

Gifting and pairing

This sign works well on its own, but it also pairs easily with other pieces in a room. A cabin name over the mantel and a smaller last-name sign by the door read as a set without being matchy. For a housewarming, people often order the mountain sign alongside a coaster set or a small shelf piece in the same wood, so the grain carries across the gift. We ship every order in kraft paper and a snug box built for the size of the piece, so it arrives ready to hang without extra packaging to sort through. That matters for gifts especially, since the person receiving it is often unwrapping it in front of you.

We draw each ridge line in vector form from the real range or skyline you name, then fit it inside the ring with the pine row beneath it. It takes longer than a template approach, but it means every sign gets its own profile. On the stained face especially that extra time shows: the grain runs behind the peaks and reinforces the landscape, as though the wood itself is the terrain.

Fitting the pieces is a small puzzle every time. The banner has to cross the ring without crowding the lowest pines, the name has to fill the banner without touching its folds, and the flower cluster underneath has to balance the weight of the peaks above. We adjust until the layers read as one object instead of four stacked ones. That vector file is yours alone; no other sign shares it.

From there the design goes to the laser, cut from Baltic birch. Then it takes the finish you've chosen: a walnut-tone stain for a deep, quiet darkness, or the natural warm face that lets the engraved line carry the detail. After cutting, we hand-sand the face and ease every edge of the silhouette, because a ridgeline has a lot of edges and each one gets touched during hanging. The oil finish goes on last, rubbed in by hand so the grain shows through rather than sitting under a coating. Before packing, we check the piece in raking light, which reveals any sanding scratch or rough cut the flat view hides.
