At the center: your zodiac symbol, laser-cut from Baltic birch, clean and precise. Around it, wood builds outward in layers: a middle ring, a decorative outer frame, and a scatter of hanging elements suspended on thin cord below. Nothing sits flat against anything else. Each layer floats a hair above the next, so shadow moves between them as the light in the room changes through the day.

We assemble every piece by hand from parts cut to order. It’s real wood, not a decal or a print, and it behaves like wood: warm, a little uneven, imperfect in the particular way that handmade things are.

What we need from you: the zodiac sign, and optionally a name if you’d like it incorporated. That’s it.

The materials

The rings are Baltic birch, ¼-inch stock cut cleanly by laser. Birch holds fine detail without scorching at the edges, which matters for symbols this small, and its grain runs warm and even, so the layering itself does the visual work.

Some signs get a darker hand-painted layer for contrast, used on the symbol or the innermost ring depending on which sign you choose. Not every sign uses it. The contrast reads cleanest at this 12-inch scale, so we only add it where it earns its place.

The cord holding the lower hanging elements is undyed natural cotton, kept consistent with the rest of the palette.

The signs

We make all 12 signs, each from its own symbol file, a glyph refined to read well at the size it’s cut. We didn’t reach for clip art. Every symbol is drawn in-house, with stroke weight adjusted so the lines survive the laser at ¼-inch scale without going too thin.

The symbol carries from across a room on its own. We leave the sign name off the design on purpose. This is meant for someone who already knows the shape, not labeled like a poster.

The optional name

Add a name and we engrave it in a clean, minimal typeface on the innermost ring, tucked below the symbol inside the layered frame, present, not competing for attention. Good call for a gift you want to read as unmistakably personal. If you’re buying it for yourself, or just for the room, leaving the name off keeps it more abstract.

How it’s made

Day 1: Cutting. All the flat pieces are laser-cut in one session: the symbol, the rings, the outer frame, and the hanging elements. We check each piece for clean edges before assembly.

Day 1–2: Sanding and finish. The birch face pieces are sanded through three passes: 120-grit to clear laser residue, 220-grit for the final surface, 320-grit on the cut edges. Then they’re wiped with a coat of matte oil. The contrast pieces are painted by hand instead, one piece at a time, so the colour sits flat against the warm birch beside it.

Day 2–4: Assembly. This is the time-intensive part. The layers are assembled with small spacers between them so they don’t sit flat. The spacers are invisible from the front. They’re tucked behind the rings. The hanging elements are knotted onto the cord and tested for even hang before we set the knots.

Day 4–5: Finishing and hang hardware. We add a sawtooth hanger to the back of the main ring. The piece hangs from the topmost ring. The hanging elements below move slightly in air currents, which is part of the look.

Day 5–7: Package and ship. Flat-packed to protect the hanging elements in transit. USPS Priority Mail with tracking.

Scale and placement

The main ring is approximately 12 inches in diameter. The hanging elements below add another 8 to 10 inches of length depending on the sign’s design. Total vertical footprint is about 20 to 22 inches from the hang point to the bottom of the lowest hanging element.

It earns its keep above a bed, on an accent wall, or tucked into a reading corner, anywhere the layered depth can catch natural light at an angle, so the shadows between layers keep shifting through the day.

Care

This is an indoor piece, so the materials and cord aren’t built for weather. Keep it out of direct, sustained sunlight, which will lighten the birch and degrade the cord over time. Dust it with a soft dry brush, and skip the sprays entirely.

The hanging elements are tied, not glued. If one comes loose over time, we’ll send you the cord type so you can retie it yourself, or contact us and we’ll walk you through it.

We start each zodiac piece with the symbol itself, since zodiac signs carry centuries of visual vocabulary, and we work from the most recognizable forms, like the scales that read Libra even in silhouette. Each symbol becomes three or four separate profile layers, laser-cut and hand-assembled with small spacers so they cast real shadow against each other instead of sitting flat. At the right light angle, late afternoon, a lamp across the room, the piece looks like it has dimension that photography can never quite capture.

Breaking a symbol into layers is design work more than cutting work. Each layer has to read on its own and also contribute to the whole, so we decide which parts of the form come forward and which recede, then cut every profile separately from Baltic birch. The edges of each layer get hand-sanded before assembly, because once the layers are stacked, those edges become the visible contours of the piece.

Assembly happens on the bench with the layers laid out in order. We set the spacers, align each profile against the one beneath it, and check the registration from straight on and from an angle, since a layer that's a hair off shows up in the shadows it casts. The oil finish is rubbed in by hand layer by layer before final assembly, so every surface is finished, not just the ones that face out. The last check is done under a single lamp moved around the piece, watching how the shadows shift, because that shifting depth is the whole reason to build a zodiac sign this way.
