How is a bear couple figurine made?

A laser cuts each bear from its own piece of Baltic birch, working from a design that separates the figure into layers. That layering gives the finished piece depth when you look at it from an angle.

The two bears face each other, arms wrapped around a shared heart that sits slightly forward of both of them. We set the heart forward so the “love u” lettering is the first thing you see. The heart layer is cut and fitted separately, then set into the assembly at that depth.

Each bear also carries a paw-pad detail easy to miss in a photograph: a small heart cut as negative space into each foot. It’s the kind of detail that doesn’t show up unless someone is holding the piece and looking closely.

The painting

Once the layers are cut and assembled, the whole figure gets hand-painted. This is a slower step than the engraving most of our other pieces rely on, because paint has to be applied in the right order, lightest colors first, so a mistake in one area doesn’t require redoing work already finished elsewhere.

The bears themselves stay a warm brown, close to a classic teddy-bear tone, with pink painted into the inner ears and cream painted onto the muzzle patches for contrast against the brown. Black goes into the eyebrows and eye outlines, which is what gives the bears their expression, and it’s applied last since it’s the least forgiving color to correct if it goes on slightly off. The heart is painted red, with the “love u” lettering picked out in white so it stays legible against the red rather than blending into it.

Because we paint by hand, the brushwork on your piece, such as how thick the black eyebrow line runs or how far the pink extends into the ear, will be unique to it.

The base

The finished figure sits on a rectangular base, cut from the same Baltic birch and finished in a dark stain that contrasts against the lighter, painted figures standing on it. The base is sized and weighted to keep the piece upright on a normal shelf, nightstand, or desk without the figure wanting to tip forward under its own shape.

We chose a dark stain rather than leaving the base natural or painting it to match the bears, because the contrast is what grounds the piece visually: the eye reads the base as a stand, not as part of the figure itself.

What happens after you order

This piece is not personalized, so there’s no proof or approval step the way there is on a name sign or a seating chart. What you’re ordering is the finished design already shown.

Within 24 hours: production begins. We start cutting the layers as soon as your order comes in. There’s no layout or spelling to confirm since nothing here is customized, so this step moves straight into the cut.

Layer cutting and assembly. Each bear, the shared heart, and the base are cut as separate layers, then assembled and checked for fit before any paint goes on. A layer that’s slightly misaligned is far easier to catch and correct at this stage than after painting.

Hand-painting. The slowest step in the process. Colors go on in order, lightest to darkest, with drying time between passes so one color doesn’t bleed into the next. The black detailing goes on last.

Packing and shipping. Once the paint has fully cured, we pack it to protect the painted faces and ship it with tracking. Orders ship in 5 to 7 business days from the order date.

Giving it and displaying it

This is a shelf piece, meant to sit somewhere it’ll actually be seen: a nightstand, a bookshelf, a desk. It doesn’t come with hanging hardware and isn’t designed to go on a wall, unlike most of the rest of the catalog. Set it somewhere with a little breathing room around it so the layered depth of the bears and the forward-set heart reads, rather than tucking it into a crowded shelf where the shape gets lost against everything around it.

As a gift, it works for an anniversary or Valentine’s Day, and for a partner, a close friend, or someone in a long-distance relationship.

Care

Dust it the way you would any wood or painted decor piece: a soft, dry cloth only. Keep spray cleaners and water off the painted faces. Water can lift or dull hand-applied paint over time in a way it wouldn’t affect an engraved surface, so keep it away from a humid bathroom or a spot near a sink.

Keep it out of direct, sustained sunlight. UV exposure fades paint faster than it fades stained or natural wood, and the contrast between the bright red heart and the darker bears is part of what makes the design work, so protecting that contrast matters more here than it does on our natural or walnut-stained pieces.

The base is stained wood and holds up the same way any of our stained pieces do: stable indoors, away from prolonged direct moisture. If it ever feels loose or the bears shift on the base, stop displaying it and reach out rather than trying to re-glue it yourself.

We build it in layers, the same laser-cut construction we use across the shop, applied to a shape instead of a flat sign. Each bear is cut from its own piece, then the smaller painted details, the ears, the eyebrows, the muzzle patches, are set into the layered face so the whole thing reads with real depth rather than sitting flat like a printed cutout.
