Laser-cut in Baltic birch, walnut-stained, sanded through three grits
We cut each sign from a single panel of void-free Baltic birch, stained to a deep walnut tone: grain, warmth, and all the small variations that make wood alive.
The name goes in before anything else. We proof the layout, adjust spacing by hand if a letter pair needs it, then the laser runs at 1.2mm depth for clean, fraying-free edges. After that, three rounds of hand-sanding and a wipe of natural matte oil. No shortcuts, no assembly line.
No two signs are identical. The grain on yours will be its own.
Cutting starts within 24 hours of your order. Ships in 3–5 business days.
What we need from you: the name, and your preferred style: script or block. That’s it. We’ll send a proof within 24 hours if anything looks off before we cut.
The wood
We use void-free Baltic birch, finished in a walnut-tone stain. Walnut here is the colour, not the tree: no piece in the shop is cut from solid walnut. The distinction matters because plenty of sellers use “walnut” to mean a printed film over MDF, and this is not that. Baltic birch is laminated from cabinet-grade plies with no gaps in the core, which is what lets the laser hold a crisp edge and keeps the engraving from crumbling over years.
The grain varies. Some panels run straight, some have a gentle figure. We select panels for consistency within a sign, but we cannot match the exact grain in the photos. That’s the point. Yours will have its own character.
Width scales with the name. A short name (three to five letters) fits around 12 inches. A medium name (six to nine letters) runs 14 to 16 inches. A long name (ten to fourteen letters) goes 18 to 20 inches. Thickness is always ¾ inch. We’ll add extra spacing around the letters so the sign doesn’t feel crowded. The proportions get checked before the laser runs.
The process, step by step
We make each sign from scratch when the order comes in.
Day 1: Board selection and layout. We pull a birch panel and check the face veneer for any patch or defect under the engraving area. The letters go into our design software where we proof spacing and adjust any pairs that crowd optically. The layout must look right, not mathematically even.
Day 1–2: Precision laser engraving. The laser cuts at 1.2mm depth, enough to give the letters real dimension without cutting through. A slow pass ensures sharp, clean edges. Fast passes cause fraying. We don’t rush. Depth stays consistent across the full name.
Day 2–3: Hand-sanding. We sand in three passes: 120-grit first to knock down laser char, then 220 and 320 for the surface and edges. The letters themselves stay untouched by sandpaper; a soft-bristle brush clears the dust so the engraved edge keeps its crispness.
Day 3–4: Oil finish. A single wipe of natural matte oil, food-safe and VOC-free, which matters since this hangs in a nursery, deepens the walnut tone and brings the grain forward. It needs a full day to cure before we box it up. That’s the difference between raw wood and something clearly cared for.
Day 4–5: Packaging and ship. Kraft paper, then bubble-wrap, then a snug cardboard box. USPS Priority Mail with tracking.
Hanging
Two options. We’ll include a sawtooth hanger centered on the back, just a nail and a level. Or, if you prefer a floating look, we’ll skip the hanger and you can use two small Command strips or a pair of nails. Let us know your preference in the order notes. If you don’t mention it, we’ll include the sawtooth hanger.
The sign is ¾ inch thick, so it sits away from the wall slightly. That gap is visible and intentional. It gives the sign a small shadow and makes it look less flat.
Personalization details
Script is the traditional nursery choice, connected letters with a softer feel. Block is cleaner and more modern, each letter separate, even-weighted, and readable from across the room. Both are custom-spaced for your name. We adjust every order and never use templates, checking pair spacing by eye for optical balance.
Price scales with name length: short names (three to five letters) are $55, medium names (six to nine letters) are $60, and long names (ten to fourteen letters) are $65. The price difference reflects the extra material and layout time, not a fixed formula. If your name is right on the edge of a range, contact us and we’ll confirm before you check out.
Hyphens, apostrophes, and accent marks are all possible, though contact us first. Some characters need layout adjustments that affect spacing. We’ve done Mc- prefixes, French accents, and Scandinavian letters, normally no problem, but we want to check before the laser runs.
We send a proof image within 24 hours of the order if the name is longer than eight letters, if there’s a special character, or if anything in the layout looks off to us. We’ll message you the proof directly. For straightforward names in standard styles, we typically start cutting right away, but we’ll let you know either way.
Care
Dry hang only. The birch and its finish are stable in normal indoor conditions. Keep it away from bathrooms or any room where humidity swings regularly; the wood will move with it. Wipe dust with a dry or barely damp cloth. No sprays. The matte oil finish doesn’t need re-coating. If the surface ever looks dull after years, a fresh wipe of food-safe mineral oil brings it back.
Contact us before ordering if you have a name over 14 letters, a hyphenated name, or a special character. Everything else, style, size, hanging preference, goes in the order notes. Turnaround is 3 to 5 business days, and if you need it sooner, contact us first. We can sometimes do rush orders depending on the queue.

The walnut tone is the darkest finish in the shop, and it's the one we'd pick for our own nursery. The board underneath is void-free Baltic birch: cabinet-grade plies that hold a fine laser edge without crumbling. The stain goes on before sealing and carries the colour edge to edge, then one wipe of natural matte oil deepens the tone without leaving a film.
Sorting the blanks is the step nobody sees but everybody benefits from. Birch takes stain unevenly where the face veneer changes density, so before your name is ever laid out we check the panel for patches that would drink more colour than the rest. A blank that would put a blotch through the middle of a name goes back on the rack for a different project. The one that makes it to the laser gives the letters a consistent, even ground to sit against.
After engraving, the sanding runs in three passes, each grit finer than the last, until the surface has that soft, almost-warm feel birch takes when it's worked properly. The matte oil is wiped on by hand and buffed back, which pulls the chocolate depth out of the grain without adding gloss, so the sign reads calm rather than shiny under nursery light. Before packing, we check the letters edge by edge for a crisp engraved line and give the face one last pass with a clean cloth. It's a simple sign made carefully, which is exactly what a nursery wall calls for.

Common questions
What is the Walnut Nursery Name Sign?
The Walnut Nursery Name Sign is a name cut from void-free Baltic birch, roughly 12 to 20 inches wide depending on the name, at three quarters of an inch thick. It costs $55.00. You choose script or block letters and a name-length band of short, medium, or long. The walnut here is the tone, not the tree: a deep walnut-colour stain carried on birch, so the sign reads dark and warm while the grain keeps showing through the finish. We cut it, hand-sand it in three passes at 120, then 220, then 320 grit, and finish it in a natural matte oil that is food-safe and carries no VOCs. Wipe it with a dry cloth, keep it out of standing water and direct sun. We start cutting within 24 hours and it ships in 3 to 5 business days.
What material is the Walnut Nursery Name Sign made from?
The Walnut Nursery Name Sign is handcrafted from Walnut-stained Baltic birch. Finished with Natural matte oil, food-safe, no VOCs.

What is your return policy for personalized items?
Because each piece is made to order with your personalization, we cannot accept returns for a change of mind. If your order arrives damaged, defective, or not what you ordered, contact us within 30 days of delivery and we will replace it or refund you in full.
What happens if the engraving has a mistake?
You approve a free digital proof within 24 hours before we cut, which catches almost every mistake before production. If a piece is still engraved wrong and the error is ours, we remake it free, covered by the 30-day make-it-right guarantee.
Is this worth more than cheaper nursery signs?
The $30 to $40 signs are typically MDF or thin plywood with a printed film, materials that can't hold the same laser detail and won't sand to the same finish. They won't look the same in 10 years, either. Void-free birch ages well: the stained tone stays put, and the matte oil stays stable with no chipped edges. We've watched these signs age in customers' homes. They move from nursery to bedroom wall as children grow up. The material holds up to that.
What if the style doesn't match my nursery?
We have script and block, both shown in the product photos across several name lengths. If you're uncertain which reads better with your space, message us with the name and your aesthetic and we'll tell you which we'd choose. For names over 8 letters or names with special characters, we send a layout proof before cutting so you can see exactly how it sits. Ask about your style
